The stated session of Home Care workers seminar took place
in Almaty. Previous seminar in Shymkent was organized for patronage workers
from South-Kazakhstani and Zhambyl Oblast and allowed them to raise the
level of the professional skills. But this one was arranged for workers
from the rest of the regions. Among 23 participants of the seminar there
were the heads of the Home Care Program and team-leaders from 8 Heseds.

The program of the seminar was full of lectures on professional
subjects and practical training, psychological and professional tests,
lectures on Jewish tradition and training on using rehabilitation equipment…Diversity
of the topics is caused by a lot of different types of work the workers
should do, therefore, the teachers tried to give as much information as
they could. Tatyana Mussatova - teacher of Almaty Medical College, made
an invaluable contribution in organizing the seminar. She is good specialist
and experienced lecturer; she adapted her course "Visiting nurse"
for Home Care Program. The way she gives her classes is to give examples
and practical training right after giving theoretical part; so it helps
to learn both theoretical and practical parts fast and effectively. For
example, after the lecture about how to take care of bed-patients, the
participants of the seminar divided into two groups and had practical
training on care of bed-patients. One part of the group played role of
bed-patients, and the other had to serve them: help them to wash, clean
teeth, brush hair and many other procedures. Marina Iorish, the team leader
in Almaty Hesed, gave some Home Care practical trainings.
Valentina Sokolkova, coordinator of Home Care Program in
Kazakhstan, read lectures about the problems of elderly people. The main
goal of the program workers is to help clients to satisfy their physical,
physiological, emotional and intellectual needs, to define those needs
in every single case. A method of defining those needs was one of the
topics for one of the lectures. The other lecture was dedicated to practical
work with people suffering of loss of memory (Alzheimer's disease). This
theme is very important because this disease is pretty frequent among
elderly people. Moreover, Valentina had presented the samples of rehabilitation
equipment to the participants of the seminar, both new for regional Heseds
and the equipment that is being used, but complicated to use.
Irina Zaltsman, a very experienced psychologist and one of
the favorite teachers at Kazakhstani seminars, read two lectures about
the most important aspects of Home care workers. One of them is making
contact with elderly people. There is no doubt that it is a big problem
because of age-related changes in client's psychology and outlook. The
second psychology problem is connected with the "burn out syndrome".
Irina gave high-qualified recommendations to prevent emotional tiredness
that home care workers have after contacting with old people.
The participants of the seminar took "test of professional
skills" at the end of the seminar to strengthen their knowledge.
And as it was expected the answers showed good knowledge. Theoretical
and practical classes were balanced very well and they made the seminar
a very good school of improving skills.
