The administrative center is Kokshetau. Here,
in the center of Kazakhstan is situated the main city of Kazakhstan Astana - the
capital of the country (previous names: Akmola, in 1961-1992 - Tselinograd). It
has been the capital since 1997. The total area of Akmola oblast
is about 146,6 square kilometers. The population is about 820 thousand people;
the urban population is 46%. There are 10 cities, 14 urban-type communities in
the oblast. Astana is a port on Ishim River and a railway junction.
The population is about 350 thousand people. It is an industry center. There are
the following branches of the industry there: an engineering and metalworking
industry, food and light industry. Plants: "Kazakhselmash", pumping,
railway-carriage repair works, etc. Also there are 4 Universities,
a theatre, a museum of regional and an art museum. Astana was
founded as a fortress. Kokshetau City
(formerly Kokchetav) is a railway junction, too. The population is 143 thousand
people. It was founded in 1824. It is an industry center. The main industry objects
are: oxygen equipment and instrument making plants, chemical industrial complex,
food and light industry enterprises. There is a Pedagogical Institute,
museum of regional and a drama theatre there. Jewish people
live all over the territory of the oblast. Since 1998 American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC,
"Joint") cooperates with Astana
Jewish national organizations. Since 1999 "Joint" helps to Kokshetau
Jewish Cultural Center as a sponsor. Welfare Center "Hesed" sponsored
by "Joint" started working in Astana in 2000 and in Kokshetau City this
one started working in 2001.
