The administrative center is Uralsk City.
The total territory of the oblast is 151.2 thousand square kilometers;
the population is 607 thousand people. The administrative center is Uralsk City.
Uralsk was founded in 1584; since 1613 it has its modern location; and until
1775 it had been called Yaitskiy Gorodok. Uralsk City is known as a port on
Ural River and also as a railway station. The population of the city is 204
thousand people.
The engineering industry and meatpacking industry are developed
there. The city has got engineering, reinforcing, instrument-making plants,
a shipyard, the "Metallist" plant and a mechanical plant, light and
food industry.
There are two Universities, museum of Yemelyan Pugachyov; also
the city has got drama theatre and the museum of local lore.
Since 1999 American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC,
"Joint") cooperates with Uralsk
Jewish national organizations. Welfare Center "Hesed" sponsored by
"Joint" started working here in 2001.
