Hanukkah in Uralsk City started from candle lightening and reading
prayers. On Sunday December 9, 2001 Uralsk Jewish Community came to the decorated
hall and lit the first candle dedicated to the Miracle of Temple. Hesed volunteers
reminded about tradition of the Holiday and all the children were given whipping
tops and told how to play with them.
Children studying in Jewish Community Center had prepared a holiday
concert program; they read poems and sang songs. Children danced a dance called
"Dror" ("Sparrow"). The audience enjoyed the dance with
candles very much and started dancing with "sparrow baby birds".
The employees of the Community Center went to celebrate Shabbat
in Fyodorovka Village - suburb of Uralsk City. There are many Jewish families
live there and celebrating Hanukkah is a chance for them to learn more about
Jewish History and Tradition.
