The administrative center is Atyrau City.
The oblast was known before 1992 as Guryevskaya Oblast. The total
territory of the oblast is 113.5 thousand square kilometers; the population
is 445 thousand people. The administrative center is Railway Station Atyrau.
Atyrau was founded by brothers Guryevs as a port on Ural River. The population
of the city is 152.5 thousand people.
The priority in development got the oil-refining and chemical industries;
there are also engineering industry and meatpacking plant there. There is a
Pedagogical University; also the city has got drama theatre and the museum of
local lore.
Since 1999 American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (AJJDC,
"Joint") cooperates with Atyrau
Jewish national organizations.
