Ust-Kamenogorsk Jews used to celebrate all National Holidays -
Purim and Rosh-ha-Shana in the World Friendship House before the Jewish Cultural
Center was established. That time, in 1993 the Community gathered about 80 people
not only for holidays but just to communicate during weekdays. It seemed people
had a lot of common interests: from household chores to Jewish National Traditions.
Vladimir Hoffman who became the first Chairman of JCC used different
ways to find new members of the Community. One of them is searching in the city
archive.
That is why in 1996 when the Center was made officially it had
about 400 members; and all of them knew exactly what united them in one big
Jewish Home.
The first meeting was very solemn; there was Stanley Abramovich -
Country Director from Jerusalem and Alexander Baron, the President of "Mitsva"
Association from Almaty.
Step by step new forms of work with the members of the Community were found.
Now adults and children go to Sunday school, where Natalya Lebedeva taught Hebrew
and Vladlen Schuster (who is deceased now) taught Israeli history and traditions.
Today the Cultural Center participates in all Community events,
concerts and work with children.
