One day I was impressed with the lines written by Ivan Bunin,
which his hero kept saying:
We are from ancient Ezra's clan:
When we fall in love we die.
I remembered them and thought about interrelation between
times while I was listening Yevgeniya Karyakina - the Head of Republican
Jewish Library. She was telling about medieval Jewish poetry, which was
completely unknown for the listeners therefore very interesting. The audience
got to know about life and work of the Early Medieval poets: Ibn-Ezrs
- Moshe and Abraham, Jehuda Galevi, Solomon Ibn-Gabirol and Immanuel Roman.
The poems were selected in a very appropriate way; the listeners had a
chance to listen to philosophic poems, poems about beauty of nature, and
about love. Yevgeniya Karyakina read them very well; this was wonder they
sounded very modern and made me think that a real poetry reflects eternal
problems.
The musical performance was just at the right time. The
musicians performed songs based on medieval poets poems written by Moldavian
composers Inna Zhvanetskaya and Larissa Tabachnik. Yelena Gutovskaya accompanied
by Yelena Shalkova (the piano) and Mikhail Shklovskiy (the violin cello)
sang them. The composers made the best use of the music to show the poetry
created about a thousand years ago is still alive for music and poetry
lovers.
