Moris Davydovich Simashko - a very talented writer and
an outstanding scientist-orientalist was very famous in Kazakhstan, he
devoted many years of his life to this country.
In 2000 he moved to Israel, he promised to come back but
did not have time to do that. He suddenly deceased in December that year.
On 20 March his friends, representatives of Israeli Embassy,
Sokhnut, pen-club and readers of the library gathered to stand in memory
of Moris Simashko who could celebrate his 77 birthday on 18 March.
The books written by Moris Simashko were exhibited on a large
bookshelf in the library. They are very popular among the readers.
In Hesed Polina there were candles lighted in front of the
portrait of the writer and was a basket of fresh spring flowers. The memorial
meeting started with the documentary filmed by Eduard Medvedkin. Everybody
could see Simashko on the screen and could hear his moving speech.
The President of Mitsva Association Alexander Baron made
opening speech and after it the friends and admirers of the talent of
Moris Simashko began to share their impressions about meetings with the
writer with each other. Leonid Girsh read a poem dedicated to he memory
of Moris Simashko. Murat Auezov, Anatoliy Khovin, Yevgeniya Plotnikova,
Eduard Medvedkin and many others were talking about an outstanding personality
of Moris Simashko, about his books on history, culture and social movements
on the East. They remembered his autobiographical in many respects novel
"Gu-Ga" dedicated to scantily explored by the Soviet history
theme - penal battalions (the film studio in Odessa shot a movie
on it).
