The City Jewish Library was opened in 1993 & now continues its'
successful activity. During last year the Library has become popular among Jewish
public thanks to invaluable support of "Joint" international committee & also
to regular acquisition of the most interesting books & presents from private
libraries.
The Library unites the net of Jewish libraries all over Kazakhstan.
It is the center of implantation of new ideas, programs & methodic literature.
The main task of the Library is the development of the Jewish culture in Kazakhstan,
creation of informational fields for grown-ups & children. Readers are vividly
interested in political & cultural news of Israel. The implantation of the Internet
will allow to get operationally fresh digest of information about Israel, to
follow novelties of the literature, to support communication with other libraries
of CIS & Israel.
Nowadays
the Library staff includes one regular librarian & five assistants-volunteers.
400 people attend the Library by means of a season ticket, that's 30 people
every day. There is a reading-hall that is equipped by audio & video materials
& also a game room. The life always boils there. People who are eager to communicate,
to play chess, draughts, domino, backgammon often meet here.
There are 2,5 thousand books on Russian, English & Jewish. Periodical
press is presented by the following magazines: "Alef", "22", "Fathers & Children",
"The Star" & the following newspapers: "Ami", "International Jewish newspaper"
& herald of "Davar" Jewish community.
"Yiddish club" & "Club of poetry amateurs" cultural programs are
attached to the library. Conferences devoted to famous Jewish people are held
here within the limits of "Memorable dates of month". The presentation of new
books written by famous & little known authors is organized two times a month.
Discussion of these books is held with the participation of the readers who
got acquainted with them (books) in advance.
The "Library on Wheels" program foresees departures to he Warm Houses
& also delivery of literature for not mobile underwardships. Collective visits
of the First nights & are organized in Almaty.
