In the national income industry takes 25,1%, agriculture - 34,2%. The following
branches of industry are developed: coal, oil and gas production, extraction
of iron, copper, lead, zinc and nickel ores, bauxites and other rock minerals
production.
The leading branches of industry are: non-ferrous and ferrous metallurgy, chemical
industry and mechanical engineering, light and food industry, oil processing
and building materials production.
The
area of agriculture cropland is 197,6 million hectares. Because of developing
of virgin lands in 1954-60 (25,5 million hectares) Kazakhstan became a prominent
grain producer. The area under crop is 35,182 thousand hectares (in 1990), cereals
66,4% (mainly wheat), forage crops 31,4% and industrial crops (sunflower, cotton,
flax). There is fruit, wine and melon growing. The area of irrigation agriculture
cropland is 2308 thousand hectares (1990) mainly in South Kazakhstan. Also there
is sheep, granger's cattle, pig, camel and horse breeding.
The exploitation length of railways is more than 14 thousand kilometers, highways
- 165 thousand kilometers, including macadam and black top - 69%.
Navigation is developed in the Caspian Sea, Balkhash Lake, Irtysh River, Syrdarya
River, and Ural River.
There are some resorts in Kazakhstan: Borovoye, Alma-Arasan, Saryagach etc.
