The Shymkent Hesed opened on April 1, 1998. It was named after the last Shymkent Rabbi Shimon Polonsky. Shimon died in 1996. He was a wonderful person. He knew all of the city Jews by name. He often came to the cemetery to see those he knew. And now every time people say Hesed "Shimon", they remember about the last Shymkent Rabbi.

The following programs operate in the Hesed "Shimon":

FOOD PROGRAMS - includes several services:
1. Monthly food packages
2. Food delivered home
3. Meals on wheels
4. Warm home
HOME CARE SERVICE.The head is Nadezhda Reznikova. The homecare staff looks after the Hesed clients at their homes; the services include - cleaning, laundry, food stuff purchase, socialization, moral support. Training is held for staff every week, as well as lessons on the Jewish tradition and customs.
REHABILITATIION EQUIPMENT SERVICE.The head is Nadezhda Reznikova. The service provides the needy Hesed clients with necessary rehabilitation equipment. The program staff visits immobile clients at home to assess their needs, conditions, and to teach the clients how to use the equipment. Potential clients are searched through the database and volunteers. The Hesed has a rehabilitation equipment stand, which allows the clients to receive complete information on the program.
HESED-ON-WHEELS. The program includes 321 people from the South Kazakhstan oblast and Kzyl-Orda. The program aim is database renewal and extending, and attracting new families from the periphery. This program enables Hesed to provide the clients in remote areas with food packages and medicines. Volunteers assist in preparations for Jewish holidays and bringing clients to the large scale community events.
MEDICAL SERVICE. The program is meant to raise the quality of medical aid. The service covers 285 people. The head is Viktor Ponomarev.
SOS. The head is M. Gurbanova.
WINTER RELIEF. The service provides its clients with coal, warm clothes, footwear, blankets, and partly pays for the public utilities.
