"HOME CARE" PROGRAM

Valentina Sokolkova
The head of program is Valentina Sokolkova

"Home Care" service has been working in Almaty for 5 years. In 1997 when it just began working it had 20 clients, in 1999 their number was 63, and in 2002 the service became a reliable support for 185 Jews in need. Workers of the program not only look after the patients and their homes, but also make friends with them. "First we have to take care of one's soul and then to help one's body" - repeats Valentina Sokolkova, the program coordinator.

Client  The importance of "Home Care" service is hard to overestimate. Consider the words "Home Care". So many things are behind them! Helplessness, disease, loneliness, fear - on one hand, and sympathy, help, care - on the other hand. By looking after a patient, his house, and things the program renews his will to live. Patients start to rejoice at the sun, at a new day, to look forward to seeing their assistant again, to take part in life of the community.

To make the life of patients more varied, "Home Care" service in Hesed Polina works together with the Community center, library, and "Day Center". It is hard to imagine the program without this collaboration. Volunteers notice that even patients with the most difficult nature become milder after visiting Hesed.

The work of "Home Care" service employees makes us remember of "Gmilut Hesed" commandment ("Good Deed"). When performing good deeds they do not wait for somebody's help in return. The best reward for them is shining eyes of their patients.

A real case

Mariya R. is a nice, miniature, and very kind old woman. She was born in 1913. Having worked all her life as a nurse she became alone in her old age - she has no children or relatives, most of her friends are already gone. Hesed became her own home, and a woman-assistant became a member of her family. Mariya used to visit all meetings of "Day Center" while she was able to.

Now she is very weak and does not rise from her bed. Heart diseases, oncology and other maladies are destroying her body. But Mariya's heart and mind deny her diseases, she longs for a full spiritual life. Workers of "Home Care" service do their best to make the patient feel herself a full member of the community. Every holiday and celebration does not set Mariya's home aside. She waits for every event and tries to get prepared for the meeting. The woman constantly rereads books on Jewish history and Tradition and draws spiritual inspiration from talks with her woman-assistant.

The only thing Mariya prays G-d for is to give her strength to help the community. Be happy, our dear granny! Your smile and love for your people is the best help for the community and reward for workers of "Home Care" service.
