MERRY PURIM IN KARAGANDA CITY

On 24 February Jewish Community of Karaganda City celebrated Purim of 5762. The holiday was held in a spacious, light and warm hall of the Center "Sary Zhailyau" in Karaganda House of World Friendship. A week before the holiday the workers of the Community Center "Miriam" started giving phone calls to the Community members and inviting everybody personally. We all wanted to do a real holiday for the whole city. And we did it!

About 250-300 people came to the Center "Sary Zhailau". Some of them were total novices: for example the correspondent of Karaganda Evening newspaper, for the first time presented at Jewish National Holiday. The other people felt right at home, especially the children of the Family Club of the Community Center "Miriam'. Masqueraded children had a dress rehearsal in the morning: they repeated poems, dances and songs under the direction of the Director of the Center Irina Kozhanovskaya and her girlfriends choirmaster Yuliya Arkhipova and choreographer Yana Syomina. Boris Propishchan provided musical illustration of the holiday.

The holiday itself started from the performance of the trio "Shalom' (Rodion and Inessa Shatilovs, Fyodor Malin), which sang "A song about vineyard" written by them. Then children sang songs, danced the dance "Klezmers" accompanied by children percussion band. Stella Sukhorukova sang the song "Gomentashen". The holiday continued with carrying out the main Purim commandment - listening to "Megilat Ester" read by Alexander Abramovich. Tatyana Gartman Director of Jewish Sunday School congratulated everybody with Purim on behalf of Israeli Consular Department and gave presents to children. The Sunday School Chorus sang "Hallelujah" and "Ose Shalom". And then there was funny Purimshpil accompanied with amusing poems and popular merry melodies:

Aman: Your Majesty, I am regarding those Jews again.
Ahashverosh: What about them?
Aman: They never shave off their beards, never eat suet, and never work on Saturdays.
Ahashverosh: What do you want me to do about them?
Aman: I want to make a suggestion,
I am a Persian,
I am so furious with Jewish people,
I suggest hanging all of them!

Of course, there was happy end. The holiday finished with refreshments and sweets.
