The Meeting with poetess
Yelena Axelrod (Israel)
20 August 2001

The Library of the Academy of Science

Yelena Axelrod, a famous poetess from Israel came to visit and participate in OFEK. Yelena worked as a translator and wrote children poems. Her first book was edited in 1961. But her lyric poetry was beyond of the official literature.

Her books stayed on shelves for a long time, and even they were edited, but the watchful censorship crippled it to unrecognizability. Nevertheless, her books "The window to the North" (1976) and "The boat on the snow" (1986) succeeded. In the years of Perestroika her books were published in magazines.

Yelena appeared to be a candid and very beautiful just like her poems, which she presented to the audience. Everybody enjoyed her poems for children full of good sense of humor. The composer Viktor Raisman wrote music for one of her best poems and Natalya Dyachenko, the executive secretary of "Davar Herald" sang this song to the accompaniment of the guitar. It was a very nice surprise for everybody.

Yelena Axelrod presented her collected poems edited in Israel during last years: "Poems" (1992), "The other window"(1994), "Lyrics"(1997), "The wall in desert" (2000), illustrated by her son Mikhail Yakhilevich.

The first day of the festival has finished but the festival is going on
